What Solar Actually Costs in Naperville
Real installed prices for 2026, what changed when the federal tax credit expired, and an honest payback estimate — including the local quirk that makes Naperville different from the towns around it.

What changed on January 1, 2026
The 30% federal residential solar credit ended on December 31, 2025. On a $25,000 system that removed roughly $7,500 of value overnight, with no phase-down.
Illinois softened the blow: for the current program year, customer-owned systems that are not claiming a federal credit can earn an additional per-credit adder through Illinois Shines. It does not fully replace the federal credit, but it is real money, and it is why the Illinois market has held up better than most.

The Naperville paradox: cheap power, slower payback
Here is something no installer brochure will tell you. Naperville runs its own municipal electric utility, and it is cheaper than ComEd — the average residential bill is around $121.87 for about 844 kWh a month, roughly 16% below surrounding communities.
That is excellent news for your electricity bill and awkward news for solar economics. Solar earns its return by avoiding retail power. When retail power is cheaper, every kilowatt-hour your panels produce is worth less — so the same system pays back more slowly in Naperville than it does in ComEd territory a few miles away.
Naperville (municipal)

Why two quotes for the same house differ by $8,000
Wide spreads between quotes are normal and usually explainable. These are the six variables that account for most of the difference — ask about each one directly.
Roof complexity
A simple south-facing asphalt roof is the cheapest install. Steep pitch, slate or tile, multiple planes, dormers, or limited attic access all add labor — and labor is the part of the quote that varies most between installers.
Electrical service panel
Older DuPage County homes frequently need a service panel upgrade to accept a solar backfeed. That is typically $2,000–$4,000 of work. Ask whether it is in the quote or will appear later as a change order.
Equipment tier
Premium panels and microinverters cost more per watt but produce more on shaded or complex roofs. On a clean, unshaded roof that premium is often not worth paying — get quotes both ways before assuming you need the top tier.
Financing markup
A “0% APR” solar loan is rarely free. The dealer fee is usually folded into the system price, which is why financed quotes often run 10–20% above the cash price for identical equipment. Always ask for the cash price alongside the financed one.
Battery storage
Adding a home battery typically adds $10,000–$18,000. With net metering already banking your surplus, a battery in Illinois is mainly about backup power during outages rather than economics — decide on that basis.
Who keeps the RECs
This one is invisible in the sticker price and can be worth thousands. Some quotes assume the installer keeps your Illinois Shines payments in exchange for a lower headline price. Ask explicitly who receives the REC revenue.

What is the payback period on solar in Naperville?
Longer than it was, and longer than in the towns next door — for two reasons specific to Naperville. First, the federal credit is gone. Second, Naperville's municipal electricity is cheaper than ComEd's (roughly 14¢ versus about 17¢ per kWh), and solar earns its return by avoiding retail power. Cheaper power means each solar kilowatt-hour saves you less. Realistically, plan on roughly 8–10 years for a typical Naperville home — versus about 7 in ComEd towns — rather than assuming the shortest figure a sales rep quotes. Why would solar pay back faster in Aurora than in Naperville?
Because of the utility, not the sunshine. Aurora, Bolingbrook, Wheaton, Downers Grove and the rest of our service area are ComEd customers, paying a higher retail rate and receiving full retail-rate net metering under Illinois law. Naperville is served by its own municipal utility with cheaper power, and its surplus credits expire each March 31 and are cashed out at about 4.9¢ per kWh. Both effects push Naperville payback out relative to its neighbors. It is a genuine quirk of this local market, and no installer's brochure will mention it.
Is solar still worth it in Naperville then?
For plenty of homes, yes — but it depends much more on your usage than it used to. The higher your electric bill, the more each panel offsets, and Naperville has a lot of large homes with large bills. If your bill is modest, the honest answer in 2026 may be that the numbers no longer work, and a good installer will tell you that. Be skeptical of anyone who claims solar makes sense for every roof.
How do I compare quotes fairly?
Compare price per watt, not total price — divide the system price by the wattage. That single number strips out system size and makes quotes directly comparable.
